Everton F.C.

Everton Football Club is one of the oldest and most storied institutions in English football, founded in 1878 as St. Domingo's F.C. before adopting its current name a year later. The club has been a constant presence in the top flight, a founding member of both the Football League in 1888 and the Premier League in 1992. Goodison Park, its home since 1892, is a historic ground that has witnessed nine league titles, five FA Cups, and a European Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1985. The club's most glorious era came under manager Howard Kendall in the 1980s, when they won two league championships, an FA Cup, and that European trophy.

In recent decades, silverware has been scarce, with the last major trophy coming in 1995. The club has faced financial struggles and points deductions in the 2023-24 season, yet has maintained its Premier League status. Everton's identity is rooted in its passionate fan base, known for singing 'It's a Grand Old Team,' and its fierce Merseyside Derby rivalry with Liverpool. Everton was founded in 1878 by members of St. Domingo's Methodist Church, who wanted to keep a cricket team active in winter. The club joined the Football League in 1888 and won its first league title in 1890-91. A dispute over ground ownership led to a move to Goodison Park in 1892, while a breakaway faction formed Liverpool F.C. The early 20th century brought an FA Cup in 1906 and another league title in 1914-15.

The 1920s and 1930s were defined by Dixie Dean, whose 60 league goals in 1927-28 remains a record. Everton won three more league titles in that span. After World War II, the club experienced a lull until the 1960s, when Harry Catterick's team won the league in 1962-63 and the FA Cup in 1966. The greatest period came under Howard Kendall in the 1980s: league titles in 1984-85 and 1986-87, the FA Cup in 1984, and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985. Since the Premier League's inception, Everton has never been relegated but has largely finished in mid-table, with occasional top-half finishes under David Moyes (2002-2013).[edit]
