About
The EuroLeague is the top professional basketball club competition in Europe, featuring 20 elite teams in a semi-closed league format. The regular season runs from late September to mid-April, with each team playing 38 games in a round-robin. The top six advance directly to the playoffs, while teams ranked 7th through 10th enter a single-elimination Play-In Showdown. The playoffs are best-of-five series, and the Final Four, held over a weekend at a neutral venue, crowns the champion with single-elimination semifinals and a final. Known for its high skill level and passionate fanbases, the EuroLeague draws large crowds and generates significant revenue through broadcasting, sponsorships, and ticket sales. The competition has grown from a knockout cup for national champions into a year-round league that rivals any basketball competition outside the NBA.
History
The competition began as the FIBA European Champions Cup, founded on December 14, 1957, with the first season in 1958. The inaugural final saw Rīgas ASK defeat Akademik Sofia 170-152 on aggregate, drawing over 125,000 spectators across 39 games. Rīgas ASK won the next two titles as well. For decades, the tournament was a straight knockout competition for national champions. In 1988, the Final Four format was introduced, with the first edition held in Ghent, Belgium, won by Tracer Milano.
A major shift came in 1996 when the competition was rebranded as the FIBA EuroLeague. Then, on June 9, 2000, the Union des Ligues Européennes de Basket-Ball (ULEB) decided to create and manage a new top-tier competition, breaking away from FIBA. The new Euroleague's first game was on October 16, 2000, in Madrid. ULEB ran the league until 2009, when ownership transferred to Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA), a company majority-owned by 11 major European clubs. Since then, the league has grown into a semi-closed format with long-term licenses, expanded sponsorship (notably Turkish Airlines from 2010 to 2025), and increased global viewership.

Cultural Impact
The EuroLeague has shaped European basketball culture profoundly. Its Final Four weekends have become major events, drawing tens of thousands of fans to host cities and generating significant economic impact. The league's passionate fanbases, known for choreographed tifos and intense arena atmospheres, have made venues like the OAKA in Athens and Stark Arena in Belgrade legendary. The EuroLeague has also been a stepping stone for players to the NBA and a platform for European coaches to gain international recognition. Its influence extends beyond sport, with the league's brand becoming synonymous with elite European basketball.
Controversies
The EuroLeague has faced several controversies over the years. The 2000 split between FIBA and ULEB created two rival top-tier competitions, confusing fans and players until a unified league emerged. In 2019, the league's semi-closed format drew criticism from some clubs and federations who felt it limited opportunities for smaller teams. Financial disparities between licensed and wild-card teams have also sparked debate. More recently, the ongoing discussions about a potential NBA Europe project have raised concerns about the EuroLeague's long-term independence.
