Etihad Airways launched its first commercial flights in November 2003 from Abu Dhabi International Airport under the direction of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The carrier emerged as a strategic initiative to position the capital city as a global aviation hub connecting six continents. It now operates as the second-largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, serving over 110 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.

The airline differentiates itself through a focus on luxury and personalized service rather than sheer volume. Its product portfolio includes economy class, premium economy, business class, and The Residence, a unique three-room suite found on select Boeing 777 aircraft. This approach targets travelers seeking high-end experiences alongside standard travel needs.

Financial recovery followed a significant restructuring period initiated around 2017-2018 that involved fleet reductions and route rationalization. Recent reports indicate the carrier has returned to profitability while continuing to expand its network. In August 2026, Etihad announced plans to increase services to Chicago and Charlotte while launching seasonal routes to Gothenburg, Sweden, starting in December 2026. [edit]
