Espresso House

Elisabet and Charles Asker opened the first Espresso House in Lund, Sweden, during 1996 with a simple goal: to bring high-quality coffee to a relaxed setting. That single location sparked a movement that would eventually redefine the concept of fika across Scandinavia. The founders prioritized community spaces over quick transactions, creating an environment where people could work, chat, or simply unwind without feeling rushed.

By early 2024, the chain had grown into a massive network spanning five countries with more than 510 locations. This expansion includes Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Germany, proving the model works well beyond its Swedish origins. The brand maintains strong ties to local sourcing and sustainability efforts while adapting its menu to fit regional tastes. Their approach blends corporate efficiency with the warm atmosphere found in independent cafes.

In June 2015, JAB Holding Company acquired the business, providing the capital needed for further growth and operational upgrades. The investment firm also owns Starbucks' international rights and Peet's Coffee, yet Espresso House kept its distinct Nordic identity intact. Leadership changes arrived in August 2024 when Thomas Kelly took over as Group CEO from Anssi Thureson.
