Erwin Smith

Erwin Smith was born inside the Walls, the son of a teacher who secretly theorized that the royal government had altered humanity's memories and that the world beyond the Walls might not be as the monarchy claimed. Young Erwin, fascinated by the outside world and the origin of the Titans, inadvertently repeated his father's dangerous theory to others. As a result, his father was silenced by the authorities, an event that shaped Erwin's lifelong drive to uncover the truth. He joined the military and rose through the ranks of the Survey Corps due to his tactical genius and leadership, ultimately becoming its 13th Commander. [edit]

Erwin is calm, analytical, and ruthlessly pragmatic. He is a brilliant strategist who plans long-term campaigns and thinks several steps ahead. Outwardly stoic and disciplined, he often conceals his emotions to maintain authority and morale. He cares deeply for his soldiers yet is willing to sacrifice them and civilians if necessary to gain strategic advantages. This willingness to gamble with human lives has led many to call him a 'devil.' Erwin's story spans the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. He first orchestrates the 57th Exterior Scouting Mission to capture the Female Titan, knowingly sacrificing soldiers to confirm the existence of Titan shifters. Later, he leads a coup against the corrupt royal government, exposing the false king and paving the way for true leadership. His ultimate arc culminates in the return to Shiganshina District, where he devises a suicidal cavalry charge against the Beast Titan to allow Levi a chance to strike. Mortally wounded in the charge, he lies near death as Levi must choose between saving Erwin or Armin with the Colossal Titan serum. Levi chooses Armin, allowing Erwin to die, finally free from his burdens and his obsessive dream of reaching the basement.
