Schmitt's shelf of honours reflects both popular and critical acclaim. He is one of the few living writers to have won the Molière Award twice for a single play, and his work has been translated into more than forty languages. His election to the Académie royale de Belgique in 2016 placed him among the most distinguished writers of the French-speaking world.

AwardsSchmitt has received numerous awards for his writing, including two Molière Awards for The Visitor in 1994. His novel Oscar and the Lady in Pink won the Prix des libraires in 2001. He has also been honoured with the Grand Prix du Théâtre de l'Académie française in 2001 and the Prix Goncourt de la nouvelle for La Rêveuse d'Ostende in 2002.
