Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy is a 2006 anime series created by Shukou Murase and aired on WOWOW Prime. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's atmosphere has been destroyed, humanity survives in domed cities like Romdo, where humans and androids coexist under strict control. The story follows Re-l Mayer (voiced by Rie Saitou), a sharp investigator from the Civilian Intelligence Office, who uncovers a conspiracy involving mysterious beings called Proxy. In the year 2222, the Earth's surface is a toxic wasteland. Survivors live inside domed cities, the most advanced being Romdo, where humans and servant androids called AutoReivs live under constant surveillance. Re-l Mayer, a young investigator for the Civilian Intelligence Office, is smart, stubborn, and restless. She starts looking into a series of strange events: AutoReivs suddenly gaining self-awareness, a phenomenon dubbed the Cogito Virus. Her investigation pulls in Vincent Law, an immigrant with no memory of his past, who works as a cleaner in the dome construction division. Vincent is haunted by nightmares and followed by a small, childlike AutoReiv named Pino, who develops a strong attachment to him.

As Re-l and Vincent dig deeper, they uncover a hidden history. The Proxies are ancient, powerful beings tied to humanity's survival and the ecological disaster. The truth about these Proxies, the nature of the Cogito Virus, and the real purpose of the domed cities form the central mystery. Their journey takes them from the sterile corridors of Romdo into the desolate outside world, where they encounter other survivors, rogue AutoReivs, and fragments of a forgotten past. The series builds as a neo-noir puzzle, with Re-l's methodical logic clashing against Vincent's fragmented memories and Pino's innocent insights.
