Eran Zahavi

Eran Zahavi is a former Israeli professional association footballer who played as a centre-forward and retired in January 2026 at the age of 38. He holds the distinction of being Israel's all-time top scorer with 35 goals in 74 international appearances. Throughout his career, he became one of the most decorated players in Israeli history, winning the Israeli Footballer of the Year award twice and setting multiple league scoring records. His journey took him from the local Israeli leagues to major clubs in the Netherlands and China before returning home to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Zahavi is best known for his prolific goal-scoring ability and his leadership as captain of the national team. He spent significant portions of his prime years abroad, where he adapted his playing style to different leagues while maintaining high performance levels. His return to Israel in 2022 was celebrated as a homecoming, cementing his legacy as a club legend at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Even after retiring, he remains a prominent figure in Israeli sports, transitioning into business ventures and media commentary. [edit]

Eran Zahavi grew up in Rishon LeZion, a city in central Israel, where he first picked up a football and began dreaming of a professional career. He joined the youth system of Maccabi Tel Aviv early on, immersing himself in the rigorous training environment that produced many of the country's top talents. Before breaking into the first team, he spent time developing his technical skills and physical conditioning within the club's academy structure. His early years were defined by a relentless work ethic and a natural instinct for finding space in the penalty area.

He made his way through the ranks without immediate fame, grinding out performances in lower-tier matches and reserve games. By the time he entered the senior squad, he had already proven his worth in practice sessions and local tournaments. The breakthrough moment arrived during the 2013–14 season when he emerged as the league's top scorer with 29 goals. This achievement transformed him from a promising prospect into a household name in Israel, catching the attention of scouts from Europe and Asia. Prior to this surge, he was known locally for his finishing ability but had not yet attracted significant international interest. [edit]

Zahavi's career trajectory is defined by an unprecedented goal-scoring record across three continents. After his breakout 2013–14 season, he won the Israeli Footballer of the Year award for two consecutive years. The 2015–16 campaign stands as a historic milestone; he shattered the single-season Israeli Premier League record by netting 35 goals. That same year, he set another benchmark by scoring in 18 consecutive league appearances. These feats established him as the dominant force in Israeli football.

In 2016, he moved to the Netherlands to join PSV Eindhoven, facing the challenge of adapting to a more tactical European style. Despite the competition, he continued to score regularly. Later that year, he made a pivotal move to the Chinese Super League, signing with Guangzhou R&F. His six-year stint in Asia saw him become a fan favorite and a key player for the club, earning a lucrative three-year contract extension in 2018. In June 2022, he returned to his boyhood club, Maccabi Tel Aviv. His homecoming was triumphant as he immediately resumed his scoring form, eventually reaching 207 total goals for the club. He officially announced his retirement in January 2026, ending a career that saw him become Israel's all-time leading scorer. [edit]

Eran Zahavi is portrayed in the media as a determined, hard-working, and patriotic athlete. He is seen as a leader who captained the national team and led by example. His aesthetic is that of a professional athlete, fit, focused, and dedicated. On social media, he presents a more relaxed, family-oriented image, often sharing moments with his wife and children. His tone is generally humble despite his accolades, focusing on gratitude toward his clubs and country. He is recognized for his resilience, particularly after surviving the home invasion in Amsterdam, which added a layer of human drama to his public persona. [edit]

As of September 2026, Zahavi holds a distinct position in the national consciousness, ranking the 28th most famous person in Israel according to the iFANN Global Fame Rankings. He also sits at the 70th most famous person from Israel. These placements reflect a sustained presence across media coverage, search trends, and consumption signals worldwide. The rankings track this attention without needing to dissect the mechanics of public interest. His fame isn't built on manufactured celebrity but on the sheer volume of goals that defined his era. Despite his global stints in China and the Netherlands, his core support remains rooted in local club loyalty. There is no formal name for his fanbase; they are simply supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv or the Israeli national team who rallied behind a player who scored 35 times for his country. Unlike pop stars with organized campaigns, Zahavi's engagement was direct yet conditional, such as when he pledged to join Fenerbahçe if an Instagram comment hit half a million likes. This rare moment of digital bargaining highlighted a unique relationship between athlete and audience. [edit]

A viral moment occurred in 2020 when Zahavi pledged to join the Turkish club Fenerbahçe if a specific comment on his Instagram post received 500,000 likes. This rare instance of direct digital negotiation with fans highlighted his unique connection with his audience. Another memorable incident involved a violent pitch invasion at a match in Tel Aviv, which resulted in ten arrests due to the intense emotion generated by his presence. Unlike many strikers who favor one foot, Zahavi is both-footed, making him a difficult defender to mark. A terrifying chapter in his life unfolded in May 2021 when assailants broke into his Amsterdam home while he was playing for PSV. The intruders held his wife and children at gunpoint before fleeing, an event described as horrific by media outlets. Zahavi missed a match following the robbery, which brought global attention to the dangers faced by athletes living abroad. [edit]

Zahavi is married to a woman whose full name has not been widely disclosed in public sources. They have children together and lived in Amsterdam during his tenure at PSV Eindhoven. Their relationship was tested in May 2021 during the armed robbery at their home, where his family was threatened at gunpoint. The couple reportedly recovered from the trauma and remained together through his subsequent moves. Beyond the pitch, Zahavi has expressed interest in business ventures, often referring to himself as a "business man" on social media. He maintains a relatively private personal life compared to some celebrities, focusing on his family and post-football endeavors. [edit]
