Eötvös Loránd University

Cardinal Péter Pázmány laid the groundwork for this institution on January 1, 1635, in Nagyszombat. The school originally focused on theology and philosophy before shifting locations to Buda in 1637 and finally settling in Pest in 1777. It carries a heavy historical weight as the nation's oldest continuously operating center for higher learning.

In 1950, the university adopted its current name to honor Baron Loránd Eötvös, a physicist who served as rector from 1948 to 1950. Today the public research hub manages nearly 30,000 students across nine faculties using historic buildings along the Danube River alongside the modern Lágymányos Campus.

The institution recently pivoted toward specific strategic goals including sustainability and artificial intelligence literacy. In early 2026 it launched a flagship AI program while simultaneously placing green practices at the core of its operational vision.
