    About

Born in Birmingham on April 2, 1947, Emmylou Harris emerged as a defining force in American music, blending the soul of folk with the grit of country rock. Her journey began in the folk scene of the 1960s before she moved to New York City, where she recorded her first album and built a regional following. Gram Parsons discovered her talent and steered her toward country rock, a partnership that ended tragically with his death in 1973. Harris secured a contract with Reprise–Warner Bros shortly after, launching a career that would redefine the genre. Her second album, Pieces of the Sky, arrived in 1975 to immediate critical and commercial success. She followed this with a string of classics including Elite Hotel, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town, and Blue Kentucky Girl. By 1980, five of her songs had reached number one on the US country charts. The Hot Band provided a tight musical foundation for her live shows during this era. While albums like The Ballad of Sally Rose showcased her songwriting ambitions, they did not match the sales of her earlier work. However, the 1987 collaboration Trio with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt revitalized her profile, selling platinum and producing four top ten hits. The 1990s brought a shift toward deeper roots with the live recording At the Ryman in 1992, which renewed interest in the historic venue. Her 1995 album Wrecking Ball marked a new artistic direction, leading to further collaborations with Mark Knopfler on All the Roadrunning and Rodney Crowell on Old Yellow Moon. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, she released self-composed material like Red Dirt Girl and Hard Bargain under Nonesuch Records. Beyond music, Harris founded Bonaparte's Retreat, a dog rescue organization. With over 15 million records sold worldwide, 13 Grammy Awards, and inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, her influence remains deeply embedded in the industry.
