Emma Bonino

Emma Bonino entered the world on March 9, 1948, in Bra, Italy. She built a career spanning decades as a fierce advocate for civil liberties and economic reform within Italian politics. After graduating from Bocconi University in Milan with a degree in modern languages and literature in 1972, she joined the Italian Radicals. This party championed a unique mix of economic freedom and cultural liberalism that defined her political identity. Her work often challenged traditional norms, pushing for changes in areas like abortion rights and drug policy while navigating complex legislative landscapes. Bonino held several high-profile positions throughout her tenure. She served as the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection from 1995 to 1999 under the Santer Commission. Later, she returned to national service as Minister of International Trade between 2006 and 2008. Her influence peaked when she became Italy's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2014. Before these ministerial roles, she spent years in parliament, elected six times as a deputy and twice as a senator representing Rome. She also held seats in the European Parliament during the 1980s. In December 2017, she launched More Europe, a liberal list focused on European federalism ahead of the 2018 general election.
