    Overview

In 2004, director Tommy O'Haver brought Gail Carson Levine's novel Ella Enchanted to the screen, blending fantasy with comedy and a dash of family-friendly adventure. The film stars a young Anne Hathaway as Ella, a spirited teenager cursed with obedience, and Hugh Dancy as Prince Char, the charming royal who catches her eye. Cary Elwes plays the villainous uncle Edgar, while Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch add comic menace as the wicked stepmother and stepsister. Shot in Ireland and the UK, the movie had a budget of $31 million but earned only $27.4 million at the box office, making it a modest performer.

Still, its whimsical tone and Hathaway's lively performance earned it a loyal following, reflected in its 6.5/10 rating from nearly 2,000 votes. The film stands alone, not part of a franchise, but it shares DNA with other early-2000s fairy tale adaptations like A Cinderella Story. The screenplay, credited to five writers including Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith (who co-wrote 10 Things I Hate About You), takes liberties with the source material, adding anachronistic pop songs and a modern sensibility that distinguishes it from traditional fantasy fare.

Ella of Frell is born into a magical kingdom where fairies, giants, and ogres are part of everyday life. At her christening, the scatterbrained fairy godmother Lucinda bestows a "gift" upon the infant Ella: the gift of obedience. This curse forces Ella to obey any direct command, no matter how absurd or harmful. Her mother, before dying, makes Ella promise never to reveal the curse, a secret she guards fiercely. After her mother's death, Ella's father remarries the cruel Dame Olga, who brings her daughters Hattie and Olive into the household. Hattie quickly discovers Ella's weakness and exploits it relentlessly, forcing her into humiliating tasks.

Ella's only allies are her loyal elf friend Slannen and her wise nursemaid Mandy, who is secretly a powerful enchantress. Determined to break the curse, Ella learns that she must find Lucinda and convince her to undo the spell. She sets off on a journey through dangerous forests inhabited by giants and ogres. Along the way, she meets Prince Charmont, known as Char, the kingdom's charismatic heir. Their initial encounters are complicated by Ella's curse, which makes her behave erratically in his presence. Despite this, a genuine bond forms between them.

As Ella continues her quest, she must also contend with the machinations of her stepfamily, who see Char as a means to social advancement. The journey tests her courage and wit, forcing her to rely on her intelligence rather than obedience. She faces trials that challenge her understanding of freedom and choice, all while the threat of her curse looms over every interaction. The story builds toward a confrontation with Lucinda and a royal wedding that will decide the fate of the kingdom.
