    About

El Tiempo, which translates to "Time" or "The Times" in English, is Colombia's largest-circulation newspaper, founded on January 30, 1911, by Alfonso Villegas Restrepo. For seven years following the 2001 crisis of its main rival, El Espectador, which temporarily became a weekly before returning to daily publication in 2008, El Tiempo was practically the only national newspaper in Colombia. It remains a dominant force in Colombian journalism, serving as the flagship of the media conglomerate El Tiempo Casa Editorial (ETCE).

The paper is owned by a group led by Colombian businessman Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo, who purchased it from Spain's Planeta Group in March 2012. Two months later, Sarmiento Angulo also acquired shares from minority stakeholders Abdón Espinosa Valderrama and members of the Santos family. According to the 2015 General Media Study, El Tiempo reached 3,515,548 readers across all platforms, with an average daily print circulation of 969,713 copies (Monday to Saturday) and 1,695,107 for its Sunday edition.

Beyond print, ETCE publishes the sports daily El Deportivo, the free commuter paper ADN, and the city magazine Carrusel. It also operated the news channel Citytv in Bogotá. The brand has aggressively expanded into digital subscriptions, podcasts like El Tiempo Podcast, and original video content to capture younger audiences.
