Edward Kenway

Edward James Kenway was born in Swansea, Wales, in 1693 to Bernard and Linette Kenway. His father, a farmer, died when Edward was young, leaving the family in modest circumstances. Seeking adventure and wealth, Edward left home as a teenager and worked his way up from a deckhand to a privateer for the British Royal Navy during the War of the Spanish Succession. He married Caroline Scott in 1712, but his restless ambition soon drove him to sea again, this time as a pirate. In 1715, while operating in the Caribbean, Edward killed a man named Duncan Walpole, a Templar agent fleeing to Havana, and assumed his identity, hoping to sell Walpole's secrets to the Templars for a fortune. This act unknowingly thrust him into the centuries-old conflict between Assassins and Templars.[edit]

Edward is defined by a brash, hedonistic exterior that masks a deep-seated yearning for meaning. He is quick to anger, impulsive, and fiercely independent, often acting on instinct rather than ideology. His early motivations are purely material: gold, glory, and the freedom to live without restraint. Yet beneath the swagger lies a sharp intelligence and a capacity for loyalty that grows over time. He drinks heavily, brawls with gusto, and takes pleasure in the pirate's life, but the deaths of those he loves force him to confront his own selfishness. Edward's journey in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag begins in 1715 when he impersonates a Templar in Havana. Over the next few years, he becomes a key figure in the Pirate Republic of Nassau, rubbing shoulders with Blackbeard, Charles Vane, and Benjamin Hornigold. He pursues the Sage, a man who carries the memories of the ancient Isu, and the Observatory, a device that can spy on anyone, hoping to sell their secrets for a king's ransom. But the Templars, led by Governor Woodes Rogers and the Sage himself (Bartholomew Roberts), crush the Pirate Republic by 1718. Blackbeard dies at Ocracoke, Hornigold turns Templar, and Vane goes mad. Edward's wife Caroline dies of illness in 1720, news that reaches him too late. Consumed by guilt and rage, he hunts down those who wronged him, eventually killing Hornigold and Roberts. He frees the Sage's observer and destroys the Observatory, then surrenders to the Assassins, led by Ah Tabai. After a period of training, he is inducted into the Brotherhood in 1722. Edward later returns to London, marries Tessa Stephenson-Oakley, and becomes a wealthy, respected Master Assassin. He fathers Haytham Kenway in 1725. In 1735, Templars led by Reginald Birch assassinate Edward at his London manor, a death that shapes his son's turn to the Templar Order.[edit]
