    Overview

    Origin Story

Edward Elric was born in the rural village of Resembool to Van Hohenheim and Trisha Elric. After Hohenheim abandoned the family, Trisha raised the brothers alone until she died of illness when Edward was seven. Devastated, Edward and his younger brother Alphonse devoted themselves to alchemy, attempting to resurrect their mother through human transmutation—the ultimate taboo. The attempt failed catastrophically: Edward lost his left leg to a divine entity called Truth, and then his right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. Edward's limbs were replaced with advanced automail prosthetics by childhood friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako. At age twelve, Edward became the youngest State Alchemist in Amestris history, earning the title Fullmetal Alchemist and access to military research resources to find a way to restore their bodies.

    Personality

Edward is fiercely determined, hot-headed, and impulsive, often rushing into situations without thinking. He has a strong moral compass and a deep sense of responsibility, especially toward Alphonse, whose suffering he blames on himself. Edward is highly intelligent and perceptive, able to analyze complex alchemical problems on the fly. He is also stubborn and prideful, particularly about his height—a frequent source of comic frustration. Despite his brash exterior, Edward is compassionate and empathetic, often going out of his way to help others. He values human life above all and believes in the principle of equivalent exchange, though his experiences teach him that some things cannot be measured.

    Story Arc

Edward's journey begins with the Philosopher's Stone Search Arc, where he and Alphonse learn that the stone requires human sacrifices, forcing them to confront the morality of their quest. The Nina Tucker Arc devastates Edward when he fails to save a young girl fused with her dog, hardening his resolve. In the Lab 5 and Scar Arc, he uncovers the dark history of the Ishvalan genocide and his country's corruption. During the Briggs Arc, Edward matures under General Olivier Mira Armstrong, learning to navigate military politics. The Promised Day Arc is the climax: Edward confronts the homunculus Father and, in a pivotal moment, sacrifices his own alchemy—his ability to perform transmutation without a circle—to retrieve Alphonse's soul and body. By the series' end, Edward marries Winry, has two children, and becomes a rocket propulsion scientist, leaving alchemy behind.
