Eddard Stark

Eddard Stark was the second son of Lord Rickard Stark and the younger brother of Brandon, the heir to Winterfell. At age eight, he was sent as a ward to the Eyrie, where he was raised by Lord Jon Arryn alongside Robert Baratheon. The three forged a bond that would later shape the realm. Ned was never meant to be lord; that destiny belonged to Brandon. But when the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen executed both Rickard and Brandon, the mantle fell to Ned. He returned north, claimed his birthright, and soon after led the Northern forces in Robert's Rebellion. During the war, he fought at the Battle of the Trident and lifted the siege of Storm's End. Ned's story begins in Winterfell, where he rules the North with a steady hand. When his old friend Robert Baratheon arrives to offer him the position of Hand of the King, Ned is reluctant but accepts out of duty. He travels south with his daughters Sansa and Arya, leaving his wife and sons behind. In King's Landing, he quickly discovers the rot at the heart of the court. He investigates the death of the previous Hand, Jon Arryn, and uncovers the truth: Queen Cersei's children are not Robert's, making them illegitimate. Instead of using this knowledge as a weapon, he confronts Cersei, giving her time to plot. When Robert dies, Ned tries to install Stannis as king, but Littlefinger betrays him. He is arrested for treason. Offered a chance to take the black and save his family, he publicly confesses to treason. But Joffrey, the new king, orders his execution anyway. On the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor, Ned is beheaded with his own greatsword, Ice. His death ignites the War of the Five Kings.
