Ed O'Brien

Edward John O'Brien arrived in Oxford on April 15, 1968, setting the stage for a career defined by atmospheric soundscapes rather than traditional rock heroics. He attended Abingdon School alongside future bandmates, where he helped form what would become Radiohead. While Thom Yorke handled the lead vocals and primary songwriting duties, O'Brien dedicated himself to servicing those songs with unique instrumental layers. He built his reputation on creating ambient textures using sustain units, effects pedals, and the EBow, often providing the rich backing vocals that fill out the band's dense arrangements. His approach prioritized mood and texture over technical flash, turning standard guitar parts into immersive environments. Radiohead dominated the alternative rock landscape for decades, earning O'Brien a spot among the greatest guitarists of all time according to Rolling Stone in both 2010 and 2023. The group's influence culminated in their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Beyond the main band, O'Brien explored other musical avenues during the 2000s, collaborating with drummer Philip Selway on the 7 Worlds Collide project. These side ventures allowed him to stretch his creative muscles while maintaining the core identity of his primary group. His solo work emerged clearly in 2020 when he released Earth under the moniker EOB. The album drew direct inspiration from his time living in Brazil and experiencing Carnival, blending rhythmic energy with his signature textural style. A planned tour for the record faced an abrupt halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though the music stood on its own merits. He returned with Blue Morpho in May 2026, further cementing his status as a versatile artist outside the shadow of his famous band.
