ECW

WWE launched the ECW brand on June 13, 2006, as a weekly television program on the Sci Fi Channel, reviving the name of the defunct Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion whose assets WWE had purchased three years earlier. The brand was positioned as a third roster division alongside Raw and SmackDown, with its own championship titles and a dedicated one-hour show. Paul Heyman, the former owner of the original ECW, was brought in as an on-screen representative and creative consultant, though his authority diminished after the poorly received December to Dismember pay-per-view in 2006.

The roster blended original ECW talent such as Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, and Rob Van Dam with WWE developmental prospects including CM Punk, John Morrison, and The Miz. Despite the brand's marketing emphasis on hardcore wrestling, the actual product adhered to WWE's TV-PG content guidelines, leading to widespread criticism from longtime fans who derided it as "WWECW" or "Extremely Censored Wrestling." The show averaged around 1.5 million viewers during its first year but declined steadily as audience interest waned.

ECW's most notable contribution was serving as a proving ground for future main-event stars. CM Punk, John Morrison, and The Miz all held the ECW Championship before moving to Raw or SmackDown. The brand also hosted the annual ECW Homecoming special and the 2008 One Night Stand pay-per-view, though neither recaptured the atmosphere of the original promotion's events. The weekly show was cancelled in February 2010 and replaced by WWE NXT, effectively ending the brand.[edit]
