EarthBound
"Save the world with a baseball bat and some PSI powers."
Overview
Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo set off from their quiet hometown to save the world in EarthBound, a role-playing game that swaps medieval swords for baseball bats and magic beans. Released in Japan as Mother 2: Gīgu no Gyakushū in August 1994, this title arrived on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System after a five-year development cycle involving Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory. The team included writer Shigesato Itoi and future Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who steered the project through near-cancellation threats. Players traverse a modern American setting filled with talking dogs, sentient taxis, and piles of vomit while hunting down melodies to seal away the cosmic villain Giygas. The soundtrack blends salsa, reggae, and dub, creating a unique audio landscape that matches the game's quirky tone.
Initial sales in North America struggled to find an audience despite critical praise for its originality. The marketing campaign failed to connect with players expecting traditional fantasy adventures, resulting in roughly 140,000 copies sold during the SNES era. This commercial disappointment turned the game into a cult classic over the following decades. Fans kept the memory alive through word-of-mouth and internet forums, eventually leading to re-releases on the Wii U Virtual Console and the Super NES Classic Edition.
Gameplay
Combat relies on turn-based commands where players choose to attack, defend, or use items like spaghetti and apple pies. Characters utilize PSI attacks instead of traditional magic points, consuming Energy Points to unleash telekinetic blasts or healing waves. A distinctive feature is the "Guts" meter which rises when characters take damage, boosting their strength but making them more susceptible to specific enemy moves. The interface includes a "Hold" command that pauses battles to manage inventory without losing a turn.
Exploration takes place across diverse American locales ranging from the desert town of Threed to the industrial hub of Fourside. Players interact with non-player characters to solve puzzles and gather clues about the Pigmask Army's activities. The game tracks health with a numerical HP bar and allows revivals using special items or psychic abilities. Unlike many contemporaries, the battle system emphasizes psychological tactics and resource management over raw statistical growth.
Story
Thirteen-year-old Ness discovers his latent psychic powers in Onett after encountering a mysterious meteorite. He teams up with Paula from Twoson, Jeff from Winters, and Poo from Dalaam to collect eight melodies played by the Earthian people. These tunes are required to seal the evil entity Giygas, who threatens to destroy the planet. The group travels through various regions facing surreal obstacles like giant robots and mind-controlled citizens.
The narrative shifts dramatically during the final confrontation with Giygas. The screen distorts and glitches as the villain's presence overwhelms the game's logic. Ness and his friends must endure a psychological assault while relying on their bond to survive. The ending leaves the fate of the world hanging on the player's ability to withstand the chaos.
