    About

E.Leclerc started in 1948 when Édouard Leclerc opened a small store in Landerneau, Brittany, with a radical idea: sell groceries at lower margins than the traditional shops. That single store grew into a nationwide cooperative of independent entrepreneurs who share the Leclerc brand and buying power. Today it's France's number one grocery retailer, a position it has held for years despite fierce competition from Carrefour, Auchan, and Intermarché.

The cooperative model is the heart of the operation. Each store is owned and run by an adhérent, an independent businessperson who benefits from the group's collective purchasing and marketing while keeping local autonomy. This structure has allowed E.Leclerc to expand aggressively, with over 720 hypermarkets in France and more than 85 stores abroad, including in Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, and Slovenia. Recently, it has moved into convenience retail, planning roughly 50 new small-format stores by 2026 to complement its existing network of about 100.

Beyond groceries, E.Leclerc has built a diverse portfolio. Its private labels Marque Repère and Eco+ offer budget-friendly alternatives, while many larger stores feature an Espace Culturel for books, music, and electronics. The chain also runs Réglo Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator on SFR's network, and an extensive online service with over 780 drive-through pickup points across France. The My E.Leclerc app lets shoppers track spending and generate invoices, and the company's procurement arm, Siplec, handles energy products and services.
