Dynasty Warriors
"One against thousands in the Three Kingdoms era."
Overview
When Koei released Dynasty Warriors in February 1997, the studio surprised fans by stepping away from its deep strategy roots. Omega Force developed this PlayStation title as a direct combat experience rather than a grand tactical simulation. Players controlled historical figures from the Three Kingdoms period and fought against hordes of enemies in real time. This approach marked a sharp pivot for the developer, who previously focused on complex management games. Critics at the time recognized the shift immediately, praising the game for offering something entirely new compared to the company's usual output.
The core loop established here defined a new subgenre. Instead of managing armies from a map screen, players wielded weapons directly to cut through hundreds of AI soldiers. The objective was often to defeat specific commanders or capture strategic points within a set time limit. Characters like Liu Bei and Cao Cao became recognizable faces in gaming history due to their dominance on these vast battlefields. The success of this formula led to decades of sequels that expanded the roster and refined the mechanics.
Gameplay
The series relies on a unique combat style where a single character faces overwhelming numbers of generic infantry units. Players navigate large maps filled with hundreds of AI-controlled soldiers while targeting key enemy officers. Combat involves chaining basic attacks into special moves known as Musou techniques, which clear large areas of the battlefield instantly. Later entries added RPG elements such as skill trees and weapon customization to deepen the progression system.
Story
Narratives draw heavily from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a 14th-century novel depicting the fall of the Han Dynasty. The original 1997 game simplified this complex history into a linear sequence of battles. Players experienced events like the Battle of Red Cliffs from the perspective of various heroes across the rival states of Wei, Shu, and Wu. Recent titles like Dynasty Warriors: Origins have introduced alternate storylines featuring a nameless protagonist interacting with legendary figures.
