Records

May's coaching career is defined by historic achievements. He led Florida Atlantic to its first NCAA Tournament appearance, first Final Four, and first conference championship. At Michigan, he won the national title in just his second season, finishing with a 37-3 record. He is the last coach to move directly from a national championship college program to an NBA head coaching job since Larry Brown. May's ability to build winning programs from scratch sets him apart in modern basketball.

AwardsMay has won multiple coaching awards. He was named Conference USA Coach of the Year and NABC District Coach of the Year in 2023 after leading FAU to the Final Four. CBS Sports named him National Coach of the Year that same season. In 2026, he received the USBWA National Coach of the Year award after winning the national championship with Michigan.
