Dune: Part Three

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three is set to conclude his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga, drawing primarily from Dune Messiah while weaving in threads from Children of Dune. The film picks up with Paul Atreides as Emperor, his prescience burdened by the knowledge that his holy war has already claimed tens of billions of lives. The narrative tightens around three fronts: the relentless jihad spreading across the galaxy, the scheming of the Great Houses who plot his downfall, and a growing schism among the Fremen themselves.

New characters complicate the power structure. Robert Pattinson plays Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer whose shapeshifting abilities introduce a layer of political conspiracy. Anya Taylor-Joy’s Alia Atreides, a child with the memories and consciousness of an adult, serves as both spiritual guide and unsettling reminder of Bene Gesserit manipulation. Linus Sandgren replaces Greig Fraser as cinematographer, shooting on IMAX film and digital cameras to capture the desert expanses and the claustrophobic interiors of palace intrigue.

The film carries a budget estimated between $250 and $300 million, reflecting expanded sandworm-riding sequences and new visual effects techniques for the Tleilaxu. Hans Zimmer returned to compose the score immediately after finishing Part Two, incorporating custom instruments like a sand organ and throat-singing vocals. Principal photography took place in Budapest, Wadi Rum, and Leavesden, with a production delay of several months due to the 2024 SAG-AFTRA strike pushing the release from December 2025 to December 2026.[edit]

Paul Atreides sits on the Golden Lion Throne, his marriage to Princess Irulan a political necessity that has driven Chani into open opposition. Chani leads a faction of Fremen who reject the messianic prophecy that elevated Paul, viewing him as a tyrant rather than a liberator. Lady Jessica, now a Reverend Mother, maneuvers from the shadows to preserve Atreides influence, while Irulan navigates her loyalty to her deposed father and her growing understanding of Paul’s terrifying prescience.

The Tleilaxu, a secretive race of genetic engineers, dispatch Scytale to destabilize the Empire. Scytale’s ability to assume any form makes him a perfect assassin, and his plots threaten the fragile peace Paul has imposed. Meanwhile, Alia Atreides, born with the memories of her ancestors, serves as a spiritual advisor whose disturbing maturity unsettles both allies and enemies. Paul’s prescience shows him futures where the jihad consumes the universe, and he must choose among impossible paths to avert total annihilation.

The central conflict unfolds across three interlocking crises: the holy war that cannot be stopped, the political machinations of the Great Houses who seek to restore the old order, and the Fremen’s growing disillusionment. Paul becomes increasingly isolated, trapped by visions that offer no clean escape. The story builds toward a confrontation that will determine the fate of Arrakis and the Known Universe, forcing Paul to confront whether he can break the cycle of violence or whether he is doomed to become the tyrant he sought to destroy.[edit]
