Set tens of thousands of years in the future, Dune follows Paul Atreides, the young heir of House Atreides, as his family is assigned control of the desert planet Arrakis, the sole source of melange or spice. The spice is the most vital substance in the universe, extending life and enabling space travel. But the assignment is a trap set by their enemies, House Harkonnen, and the Padishah Emperor. Betrayed and attacked, Paul and his mother Jessica escape into the deep desert, where they are taken in by the Fremen, a fiercely independent desert people.

Paul begins to unlock latent abilities and fulfill a dangerous prophecy that could reshape the galaxy. The novel explores his journey from noble exile to reluctant messiah, culminating in a struggle for control of Arrakis and the fate of civilization itself. Herbert weaves together ecology, politics, religion, and philosophy into a dense, immersive narrative.

The book has sold over 12 million copies worldwide and is widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written. It won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel in 1966 and has spawned numerous adaptations, including Denis Villeneuve's acclaimed 2021 and 2024 films.[edit]
