Salabert's record is built on electoral firsts rather than trophies. In 2020 she became the first transgender person elected to the Belo Horizonte city council, and her vote total of more than 37,000 was the highest for any city council candidate in Minas Gerais at the time. Two years later she became one of the first two transgender women elected to Brazil's National Congress, and she did it as the most-voted federal deputy in Minas Gerais history. That combination of firsts and raw vote totals is what makes her record stand out: she did not squeak in, she topped the ticket. TIME recognized her in 2023 on its TIME100 Next list, jointly with Erika Hilton, for exactly that kind of impact.
