His career trajectory has been defined by immediate impact and statistical dominance. Following a record-breaking 2025 season where he led the NCAA FBS in multiple offensive categories, he moved to Stillwater to continue his development. As of 2026, he remains one of the most watched prospects in college football, known for his poise in complex offenses and ability to lead comebacks on the field. [edit]

Drew Torin Mestemaker grew up in Austin, Texas, where he attended Vandegrift High School. This program is well-known for producing elite talent in the state's competitive high school football landscape. During his time there, Mestemaker established himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in Texas, drawing attention from recruiters across the nation. His development in Austin provided the foundation for his athletic skills, allowing him to refine the mechanics and leadership qualities that would later define his college career.

In May 2024, Mestemaker made his commitment public, signing with the University of North Texas Mean Green. He officially joined the roster as a redshirt freshman, beginning his journey in the American Athletic Conference. The early years of his college tenure were spent learning the system and building chemistry with his teammates. Before becoming a household name among college football fans, he worked diligently through practice sessions and film study to prepare for the rigors of Division I play. His transition from a highly recruited high school senior to a college starter was marked by steady improvement and growing confidence within the team's offense. [edit]

Mestemaker's breakthrough arrived during the 2025 season at North Texas. Entering his first full year as a starter, he transformed the Mean Green into a high-powered offensive unit. He achieved historic success by leading the entire NCAA FBS in passing yards, passing yards per game, and total offense. These statistics earned him the title of 2025 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and secured his spot as a consensus All-American. That same year, he won the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding FBS player who began their career as a walk-on or demonstrated exceptional growth from a non-traditional path.

The momentum from his 2025 performance propelled him to a high-profile transfer to Oklahoma State University in late 2025. Joining the Big 12 Conference as a sophomore, he faced the challenge of adapting to a new system under offensive coordinator Eric Morris. His debut in the conference opener against West Virginia on September 26, 2026, showcased his readiness. Mestemaker threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Cowboys to a decisive 41-24 victory. This performance not only snapped a two-year losing skid for the program but also solidified his status as a top 20 pick in the upcoming 2027 NFL Draft. Scouts from teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers have taken notice, sending representatives to watch him closely throughout the 2026 season. [edit]
