Shinobu Kaito is a high school student with a secret: he can perfectly mimic any art style he sees. Frustrated by his own lack of a distinct voice, he uses this chameleon-like talent to win a manga competition. But his victory draws the attention of Ryuga Amamiya, a prodigious young artist with an explosive, unmistakable style, the dragon to Shinobu's chameleon. What follows is an intense rivalry that forces both to confront the nature of genius, the price of originality, and the cutthroat realities of the professional manga industry.

Written and illustrated by Ryo Ishiyama, best known for his acclaimed slice-of-life series Hinamatsuri, Dragon and Chameleon is a grounded, industry-focused narrative that draws on Ishiyama's own experiences as a manga creator. The series began serialization in Square Enix's Gangan Comics Joker in June 2022, with the first tankōbon volume released in December 2022. As of early 2025, eight volumes have been published in Japan, and an English digital edition is available through Square Enix Manga & Books.

The series has been praised for its nuanced characterization and its unsentimental look at the pressures of serialization, editorial demands, and the ethical dilemmas of copying. It was nominated for the Next Manga Award in 2023 in the Print Manga category, placing in the top twenty, a sign of rising popularity.
