Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Overview
BioWare returns with Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a 2024 action role-playing game that shifts the franchise away from its open-world roots. Players step into the boots of Rook, a customizable agent tasked with stopping the elven trickster god Solas from ending the world. This mission spirals when Rook accidentally releases two other amoral elven deities, forcing them to prevent another global conquest while navigating discrete levels accessed via fast travel. The combat system prioritizes fluid combo abilities over the tactical menu depth seen in previous entries, drawing inspiration from titles like Sony's God of War. Development began in 2015 and underwent significant pivots, including a shift from a planned live-service model to a single-player experience after the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Originally unveiled as Dreadwolf in 2022, the project received its final title in June 2024. Released on October 31, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows, The Veilguard achieved BioWare's biggest Steam launch ever and reached 1.5 million players across all platforms. While this figure fell short of Electronic Arts' internal targets, critics responded with generally positive reviews. The game secured Outstanding Video Game at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards and took home Game of the Year honors at the Gayming Awards. It also earned nominations at The Game Awards, Golden Joystick Awards, and DICE Awards, appearing on multiple year-end lists for 2024. This release stands as BioWare's final major project before the studio closes its doors in 2026.
