Dragon Age: Origins
Overview
Dragon Age: Origins dropped in November 2009 as a dark fantasy role-playing game from BioWare, marking the start of a major new franchise. Players step into the boots of a Grey Warden hailing from Ferelden, choosing between warrior, mage, or rogue classes while navigating elven, human, or dwarven heritage. The narrative thrusts you into a kingdom tearing itself apart under the shadow of an ancient evil known as the Darkspawn. You lead your squad against these monstrous forces and their master, the Archdemon, to halt an invasion that threatens all life. Combat shifts fluidly between a third-person view and a tactical top-down camera, letting you manage party members who offer deep personal stories alongside their battle skills. BioWare built this world with over 144 voice actors and music by Inon Zur, aiming for a gritty heroic fantasy distinct from their earlier Baldur's Gate titles. Development started in 2002, though dragons only joined the project after the team needed a title. Edge of Reality handled the console ports for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while the Windows version arrived first. Critics praised the rich storytelling and character depth, leading to sales exceeding 3.2 million copies and numerous Game of the Year awards. The experience launched a series that would eventually include Awakening, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
