    Overview

Doomguy, also known as the Doom Slayer, is the silent protagonist of id Software's iconic first-person shooter series. Created by designer John Romero, he first appeared as the player character in the original 1993 game Doom. A space marine clad in green combat armor, Doomguy rarely speaks on screen, letting his shotgun do the talking. In Doom Eternal, he is voiced by Matthew Waterson, with Jason E. Kelley providing additional voice work in the downloadable content The Ancient Gods: Part Two. The 2025 prequel Doom: The Dark Ages continues his story. A different interpretation of the character appeared in the 2005 film adaptation, portrayed by Karl Urban. The Doom franchise has sold over 10 million copies, with Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal both receiving critical acclaim for their fast-paced combat and heavy metal soundtrack. Doomguy has also crossed over into other games, appearing as a guest character in Quake, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and as a Mii Gunner costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He has been added as an outfit in Fall Guys and Fortnite. Critics have praised him as a symbol of pure, unadulterated video game action.

    Origin Story

Doomguy was a United States Marine Corps space marine who was reassigned to the Union Aerospace Corporation's facilities on Phobos, a moon of Mars, as punishment for assaulting his commanding officer. The officer had ordered him to fire on civilians, and Doomguy refused, then attacked him. On Phobos, UAC scientists were conducting teleportation experiments that inadvertently opened gateways to Hell. When a demonic invasion erupted, Doomguy was the only marine to survive the initial onslaught, fighting through the infested bases on Phobos and Deimos before pursuing the demons into Hell itself.

After his early battles, Doomguy became trapped in Hell, where he spent centuries slaughtering demons. He was eventually discovered by the Night Sentinels of Argent D'Nur, a medieval extra-dimensional realm, who initially saw him as a bloodied Outlander. Through a series of trials, he earned their respect. Samur Maykr, a servant of the Maykrs, offered him the Divinity Machine, which granted him superhuman strength and resilience, transforming him into the Doom Slayer. This empowered being became a legendary figure feared by Hell and the Maykrs alike.

    Personality

Doomguy is defined by an unwavering, obsessive rage directed at demons and anyone who enables them. He is a silent protagonist, rarely speaking, and his actions are driven by trauma, vengeance, and a refusal to compromise. He shows no interest in diplomacy or mercy when Hell is involved, and he sabotages any operation that uses demonic energy, regardless of the potential benefits. Despite his isolation, he has a protective instinct toward humanity and other innocent realms, choosing to remain in Hell at the end of Doom 64 to prevent future invasions.

    Story Arc

Classic Era (Doom, Doom II, Doom 64): Doomguy starts as a punished marine fighting for survival. He defeats the demonic forces on Phobos, Deimos, and Hell, then returns to an Earth overrun by demons in Doom II. After securing humanity's evacuation, he enters Hell again to stop the invasion at its source. In Doom 64, he defeats the Mother Demon and chooses to remain in Hell permanently, dedicating himself to an eternal war against demons.

Reboot Era (Doom 2016, Doom Eternal): Centuries later, Doomguy awakens from a stone sarcophagus on Mars during a new invasion triggered by UAC scientist Olivia Pierce. Now known as the Doom Slayer, he stops the invasion but is betrayed by Dr. Samuel Hayden, who teleports him away. In Doom Eternal, he returns to fight a larger invasion orchestrated by the Khan Maykr. He kills the Hell Priests, the Khan Maykr, and the Icon of Sin, then travels to Jekkad to confront the Dark Lord, the creator of demons. After killing the Dark Lord, he is imprisoned again by the Maykrs.

Upcoming Prequel (Doom: The Dark Ages): This game explores his earlier days among the Night Sentinels and his transformation into the feared Doom Slayer.
