Doom Eternal
"A high-octane combat puzzle that demands constant movement and brutal efficiency."
Overview
The Doom Slayer lands on a hellish Mars in March 2020, kicking off the seventh main entry in id Software's franchise. This sequel to the 2016 reboot shifts focus from lore-heavy exposition to gameplay-driven storytelling. Players navigate complex levels where shooting merges with platforming mechanics like double-jumps and dashes. The narrative follows the Slayer as he races across dimensions to stop the Maykrs from harvesting Earth's souls while fighting through waves of demons.
Combat functions as a relentless resource loop rather than a simple shoot-and-loot experience. Health, armor, and ammo do not appear as static pickups; players must generate them by performing executions, using the chainsaw for health, or igniting blood pools with the Flame Belcher. This system forces aggressive playstyles that discourage cover-based tactics. New tools like the dual-wielding Rocket Launcher and Sentinel Shield add layers to this fluid, acrobatic traversal system.
Gameplay
Players engage in a fast-paced cycle where survival hinges on reading enemy patterns and switching weapons instantly. The game introduces extensive platforming segments that allow the Slayer to slide under obstacles and jump between vertical platforms seamlessly. Tools like the BFG-9000 and Sentinel Shield provide tactical options against heavy enemies. The design prioritizes momentum, requiring players to stay mobile to avoid taking damage.
Story
The campaign begins with the Doom Slayer waking up on Mars after being trapped for centuries. He discovers the Maykrs have arrived to harvest human souls and unleash the Argent D'Nur upon Earth. Throughout the journey, the Slayer battles through hellish dimensions to confront the Maykr leader, David. The story unfolds directly within gameplay sequences rather than lengthy cutscenes. Two expansion packs titled The Ancient Gods conclude the narrative arc involving the Maykr conflict and the final battle against the Dark Lord.
