About This Album
Shakira's fourth studio album, Dónde Están los Ladrones?, arrived on September 29, 1998, via Sony Music Colombia. Following the success of Pies Descalzos, she teamed with producer Emilio Estefan, who saw her potential in the U.S. Latin market and became her manager. For this record, she reunited with collaborator Luis Fernando Ochoa and brought in Lester Mendez, Javier Garza, Pablo Flores, and Estéfano Salgado. The album blends rock en español with Latin pop and subtle Middle Eastern influences, showcasing Shakira's evolving sound. Its 11 tracks explore themes of heartbreak, betrayal, and resilience, delivered with raw emotion and sharp songwriting.
Recorded in Miami, the album became a commercial powerhouse, selling over a million copies in its first month and eventually moving more than 10 million worldwide. It topped Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and earned multi-platinum certifications across Latin America. Critics praised its intelligence and versatility, with AllMusic calling it a landmark of 90s Latin pop. Eight of its eleven songs were released as singles, including Ciega, Sordomuda, Tú, and Ojos Así, the latter introducing Shakira's signature Arabic-infused sound to a global audience.
