Dominic Thiem's career is marked by a historic Grand Slam breakthrough. He became the first man born in the 1990s to win a major singles title, ending a 15-year drought for that generation. His 2020 US Open victory also made him only the second Austrian to win a Grand Slam, after Thomas Muster. Thiem's one-handed backhand was a throwback to a bygone era, and his success with it is a point of pride for traditionalists. He was a consistent top-10 player for several years, reaching the ATP Finals in 2019 and 2020, and his rivalry with Nadal on clay produced some of the most thrilling matches of the decade.
