    About

Doctors Without Borders, known globally as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is an international humanitarian medical organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. Founded in 1971 by a group of French doctors and journalists, MSF operates in over 75 countries, providing war surgery, epidemic response, malnutrition treatment, and mental health support. The organization is guided by principles of medical ethics, independence, impartiality, and neutrality, and it reserves the right to speak out about the crises it witnesses.

MSF is a self-governed, member-based nonprofit. Its funding comes almost entirely from private donors, about 98 percent, which allows it to maintain operational independence from governments and political agendas. The organization employs over 67,000 staff, the vast majority of whom are locally hired medical and logistical personnel. With an annual revenue of €2.36 billion in 2024, MSF allocates roughly 85 percent of its expenditures directly to program activities.

The organization's impact is immense: it conducts over 16 million medical consultations each year and has treated more than 100 million patients since its founding. MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 for its pioneering humanitarian work. Its operational centers are located in Amsterdam, Barcelona-Athens, Brussels, Geneva, Paris, and Abidjan, with an international office in Geneva, Switzerland.

    Mission

MSF's mission is to provide medical humanitarian aid to people in crisis due to armed conflicts, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation. The organization is committed to delivering care based on medical ethics and to bearing witness, speaking out about the suffering it encounters. MSF aims to act independently, impartially, and neutrally, ensuring that medical needs, not political or economic interests, drive its responses.

    History

MSF was born from the frustration of French doctors who volunteered during the Biafran famine in Nigeria (1968-1970). They saw the Nigerian Red Cross prioritize political neutrality over speaking out about atrocities, while international aid was slow and constrained by borders. In 1971, a group including Bernard Kouchner, Max Recamier, Raymond Borel, and Philippe Bernier founded Médecins Sans Frontières, aiming to create a rapid-response medical organization that would go where patients were, regardless of borders.

The organization's early years were chaotic but driven. Its first mission was to provide emergency relief during the 1972 earthquake in Nicaragua. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, MSF expanded into conflict zones in Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Cambodia, often working in extremely dangerous conditions. The 1994 Rwandan genocide marked a turning point: MSF teams were among the first to document the scale of the killings and later spoke out about the humanitarian catastrophe in refugee camps controlled by génocidaires.

In 1999, MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which brought global recognition and increased funding. The prize money was used to launch the Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines, advocating for affordable drugs in developing countries. Since then, MSF has responded to major epidemics like HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and COVID-19, while continuing to operate in protracted conflicts in Syria, Yemen, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
