Adult Danny Torrance, now going by Dan, is a mess. He's bounced between jobs and towns, drinking heavily to suppress the psychic voice that has haunted him since childhood. A chance encounter with a young boy in a small town leads him to finally seek help, joining Alcoholics Anonymous and taking a job at a hospice. His ability to comfort the dying earns him the nickname "Doctor Sleep." But his fragile peace is shattered when he begins receiving telepathic messages from Abra Stone, a teenager whose shine is far more powerful than his own.

Abra's brightness has caught the attention of the True Knot, a wandering group of psychic vampires who feed on the steam that children release when they are tortured to death. Led by the charismatic Rose the Hat, the cult has survived for centuries by preying on the gifted. When they abduct a young boy named Bradley Trevor, Abra senses his terror and reaches out to Dan for help. Dan recognizes the danger and, despite his fear, agrees to guide her.

Dan connects with Billy Freeman, a tough-talking local who becomes an ally, and together they try to track the True Knot. The cult, meanwhile, is desperate; their supply of steam is dwindling, and they see Abra as the ultimate meal. Rose the Hat becomes obsessed with capturing her, setting a trap that puts both Abra and Dan in mortal danger. As the True Knot closes in, Dan must confront his own past, including the ghosts of the Overlook, to protect the girl who reminds him of who he used to be.

Dan's journey forces him to reconcile with the trauma he's carried for decades. He learns that his shine can be used for more than just survival; it can be a weapon, a shield, and a source of connection. The film builds to a confrontation that sends Dan back to the place where his nightmares began, where he must face the literal ghosts of his childhood and the figurative demons of his addiction.
