DJ Yella

Carraby's accolades are collective rather than personal, and that is precisely what makes them notable. As a member of N.W.A., he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, one of the few hip-hop groups ever to receive that honor, and the group was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. He is also one of only a handful of artists to have played on a debut album that reshaped an entire genre's commercial and political standing. His individual recognition comes in a different form: producers and DJs routinely cite his scratch work and low-end production as foundational to the West Coast sound, and his name appears in nearly every serious account of how gangsta rap was built.
