Disney: Twisted-Wonderland
"A magical academy where villains shine."
Overview
Disney Twisted-Wonderland is a mobile rhythm and adventure game that drops players into Night Raven College, a magical academy where students are sorted into dormitories based on the personalities of Disney's most memorable villains. The game was developed by f4samurai and published by Aniplex in collaboration with Walt Disney Japan, with Yana Toboso, creator of Black Butler, handling the original concept, main script, and character designs. Each dorm draws inspiration from a classic Disney antagonist like Maleficent or Ursula, giving the story a darkly whimsical twist. Gameplay blends visual novel-style storytelling with rhythm-based minigames, where you tap along to original songs during magical duels. The Japanese version launched on March 18, 2020, for iOS and Android, followed by an English localization on January 20, 2022, for the United States and Canada. The game carries a 12+ rating, reflecting its mild fantasy violence and suggestive themes.
Beyond the main story, players can take three types of lessons: History of Magic, Alchemy, and Flight, each improving different character stats. The rhythm game segments, called Twistunes, feature dialogue between characters displayed as miniature models, with music that changes based on story progression and character selection. The home screen uses Live2D technology to animate your favorite character, who reacts with different expressions and lines when tapped. Recommended devices include iPhone 6s or later and iPad Air (third generation) or later.
Gameplay
The core loop at Night Raven College revolves around three activities. Lessons let you raise your character cards by attending History of Magic, Alchemy, or Flight classes, each tied to a different stat. Story segments play out like a visual novel, with fully voiced dialogue and Live2D character animations. During key story moments, you face off in turn-based battles where you select spells from your hand, then jump into a Twistune: a rhythm minigame where you tap notes in time with the music. Your performance in the rhythm section boosts your attack power. Exams are weekly ranking events where you compete against other players' high scores for rewards, though there's no real-time multiplayer. You can also borrow a support character from a friend to help in battles.
Story
You are a regular student who gets pulled through a magic mirror into the world of Twisted Wonderland. You land at Night Raven College, an all-boys academy for training mages, and meet the headmage Dire Crowley, a masked figure who resembles a crow. With no way home, Crowley offers you a place to stay if you help sort out the school's chaotic dormitories. The seven dorms are each based on a Great Seven villain: Heartslabyul (Queen of Hearts), Savanaclaw (Scar), Octavinelle (Ursula), Scarabia (Jafar), Pomefiore (Evil Queen), Ignihyde (Hades), and Diasomnia (Maleficent). Each dorm has its own leader and internal conflicts. The story unfolds in chapters called Books: Book 1 deals with Heartslabyul's rigid rules, Book 2 explores Savanaclaw's survival-of-the-fittest mentality, Book 3 dives into Octavinelle's shady deals, Book 4 takes you to the Scalding Sands, Book 5 focuses on Pomefiore's obsession with beauty, Book 6 reveals Ignihyde's underworld connections, and Book 7 confronts Diasomnia's lord of malevolence. As you progress, you uncover the mystery behind the mirror and why you were summoned.
