In May 2015, a free communication platform quietly launched under the domain discordapp.com. Its creators, Stanislav Vishnevskiy and Jason Citron, had previously built OpenFeint, a mobile gaming social network sold for $104 million in 2011. Discord was designed to solve a simple problem: gamers needed a voice chat service that actually worked without the lag and complexity of older tools like TeamSpeak or Skype. Within a year, PC Gamer called it the best VoIP service available, praising its clean interface and cross-platform support.

Discord organizes communication around servers, persistent spaces with text and voice channels that users join via invitation links. Each server can be customized with roles, permissions, moderation bots, and channel categories. The platform supports real-time voice with low latency, video calls, screen sharing, and forum-style channels for asynchronous discussion. While originally aimed at gamers, Discord has evolved into a general-purpose community hub. By 2024, it reported over 227 million monthly active users sending roughly 25 billion messages per month. Its popularity ranks among the top 4,000 websites globally.

The core service remains free, with Discord Nitro offering extras like higher streaming quality, custom emojis, and larger file uploads. Creators can also monetize their servers through subscription charges. The platform's client is built with TypeScript and React, while the backend runs on Elixir, Python, and Rust. Despite its gaming origins, Discord now hosts communities ranging from book clubs and study groups to remote startup teams.
