Digital Underground achieved a Platinum certification for Sex Packets in 1991, with over one million copies sold. The Humpty Dance spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 11, and became the first rap single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart when that chart launched in 1989. Rolling Stone ranked The Humpty Dance number 397 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in 2004, and VH1 placed it at number 38 on its 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs list in 2008. The song has accumulated over 50 million streams on Spotify and over 30 million views on YouTube. In 2023, the City of Oakland officially recognized Shock G's contributions by naming August 25 as Shock G Day.
