Released in 1967 by Capitol Records, this album serves as the vehicle for the hit single that defined Linda Ronstadt's early career. While Michael Nesmith penned the title track in 1964 while a member of The Monkees, the group rejected the song for their television show and subsequent recordings. The Greenbriar Boys recorded an earlier bluegrass version on their 1966 album Better Late Than Never!, but it was Ronstadt's rendition that achieved massive commercial success.

The record captures a pivotal moment where Ronstadt transitioned from pure folk to a polished folk-rock sound. Produced by Bob Johnston, the album features lush vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar arrangements typical of the late 1960s Los Angeles scene.
