Diet Coke hit store shelves on July 8, 1982, as The Coca-Cola Company's first new brand to carry the Coca-Cola trademark since 1886. The brainchild of marketing chief Sergio Zyman and CEO Robert Goizueta, it was formulated with aspartame instead of saccharin, giving it a lighter, slightly citrusy taste that set it apart from regular Coke and from Tab, the company's earlier diet soda. Within two years, it became the top-selling diet soft drink in the United States.

The iconic silver-and-red can, originally launched in 1982, got a major refresh in 2018. The new design featured a sleek vertical wordmark and a prominent silver background, part of a broader relaunch that introduced four new flavors: Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, Twist of Lime, and Ginger Lime. That same year, the brand shifted its marketing to target a more gender-neutral, lifestyle-oriented audience, enlisting celebrities like Zendaya and Taylor Swift for campaigns. Diet Coke has also sponsored major events, including the NFL Draft, and launched the long-running "Diet Coke Break" campaign.

Diet Coke is distributed in over 200 countries, though its prominence varies. In the UK it's sold as Coca-Cola Diet, while in Australia and New Zealand it's the diet variant of Coca-Cola rather than a standalone brand. The brand has faced headwinds from declining soda consumption and the rise of "healthier" alternatives like sparkling water, but it retains a fiercely loyal fanbase. In 2023, the World Health Organization classified aspartame as "possibly carcinogenic to humans," reigniting debate over artificial sweeteners, but Diet Coke's sales remain strong, estimated at $4–6 billion annually.[edit]
