Devin Vassell grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, just outside Atlanta, where his family supported his athletic development from a very young age. He attended Lawrenceville High School, leading his team to multiple state championships during his tenure there. His senior year was particularly dominant; he averaged 21.7 points per game and earned the title of Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year. These performances placed him among the top recruits in the nation and landed him a spot on the McDonald's All-American Game roster.

Despite interest from several major programs, Vassell committed to Florida State University. He played one season for the Seminoles during the 2019–2020 campaign before declaring for the NBA Draft. In his lone collegiate season, he averaged 14.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while earning All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team honors. He also received ACC All-Freshman Team recognition, proving he could compete at a high level against seasoned college veterans before entering the pros. [edit]

The 2020 NBA Draft marked the beginning of Vassell's professional career. Although projected as a top-15 pick, he slipped slightly due to concerns about his physical frame but was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 11th overall pick in the first round. He made an immediate impact as a rookie, starting 68 games and showcasing his scoring ability early in his tenure. A memorable 26-point performance against the Dallas Mavericks in December 2020 signaled his arrival as a legitimate scorer in the league.

His rapid ascent continued into the 2021–2022 season when he solidified his role as a starter, averaging 17.9 points per game. The following year, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, becoming the youngest Spur to receive this honor since David Robinson. In the 2023–2024 season, Vassell suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a game against the Denver Nuggets, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. Despite the setback, he returned to full health for the 2024–2025 season, demonstrating resilience and commitment to the Spurs' rebuild. By 2026, he has cemented his status as one of the premier two-way players in the NBA. [edit]
