    Overview

Gru and Lucy are living the quiet suburban life with their three daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, plus a new arrival: Gru Jr., a baby who seems to have inherited his father's mischievous streak. The little menace takes particular delight in tormenting Gru, turning diaper changes and feedings into slapstick warfare.

Peace shatters when Maxime Le Mal, a flamboyant and wealthy villain from Gru's past, escapes prison with one goal: revenge. The Anti-Villain League forces the family into witness protection, relocating them to a bland neighborhood where Gru must pretend to be a normal dad. The Minions, meanwhile, get into their own trouble, experimenting with a serum that turns them into rebellious little monsters.

Directed by Chris Renaud and written by a team including Mike White and Ken Daurio, the film pits Gru against his most personal adversary yet. With new neighbors to impress, a baby to manage, and a villainous cockroach-themed nemesis on his trail, Gru must balance family chaos with his old supervillain instincts.

Six years after the events of Despicable Me 3, Gru has fully embraced his role as an Anti-Villain League agent. He lives with Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes, and the newest member of the family, baby Gru Jr. The infant is a handful, constantly pulling pranks on his father, from zapping him with a toy ray gun to sabotaging his morning routine.

The family's peaceful life is upended when Maxime Le Mal, a former associate of Gru's from his villainous days, breaks out of prison. Maxime, a man obsessed with cockroaches and theatricality, blames Gru for his imprisonment and vows to destroy everything Gru loves. The AVL, led by Silas Ramsbottom, decides the family is no longer safe in their home. They are relocated to a new town under assumed identities, with strict orders to keep a low profile.

In their new neighborhood, Gru struggles with the mundane life of a suburban dad. He tries to bond with his neighbor, Perry Prescott, a macho car salesman who seems to have everything Gru lacks. Lucy, posing as a hair stylist, finds her own challenges fitting in. Margo, now a teenager, deals with the awkwardness of a new school and a crush on a boy. Edith and Agnes try to adapt, but Agnes misses her old friends.

Meanwhile, Maxime Le Mal, aided by his girlfriend Valentina, begins tracking Gru. He uses his wealth and connections to create a device that can control minds, planning to use it at a global summit. The Minions, left behind in the relocation, accidentally get hold of a serum that turns them into aggressive, rebellious versions of themselves. They escape the AVL facility and cause chaos across the city, inadvertently drawing Maxime's attention.

Gru discovers that Maxime is planning something big. He secretly builds a gadget to counter the mind-control device, using his old villainous skills. Lucy, worried about Gru's secrecy, confronts him, leading to a heartfelt conversation about family and trust. The girls, especially Margo, prove resourceful, helping their parents gather intel on Maxime's whereabouts.

As the climax approaches, the family is forced to come together. Gru realizes he cannot protect them alone; he needs their help. The Minions, still rebellious, stumble into Maxime's lair and cause enough confusion for Gru to infiltrate. The stage is set for a final showdown where Gru must decide how much of his past he is willing to embrace to save his family.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

While Despicable Me 4 offers the expected visual flair and Minion-fueled antics, its narrative feels less inspired, relying heavily on franchise familiarity. Despite a somewhat predictable plot, the film delivers enough humor and heart to entertain younger audiences and long-time fans.

Despicable Me 4 brings back the beloved characters with a familiar blend of humor and heart, though it treads somewhat familiar ground.
