Despacito

Released on January 12, 2017, Despacito arrived as the lead single from Luis Fonsi's seventh studio album, Vida. The track blends cumbia rhythms and reggaeton beats into a Latin pop framework, creating an upbeat soundscape that relies on traditional Caribbean influences rather than modern electronic production tricks. Writers Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Erika Ender, and María de la Vega crafted lyrics describing a slow-paced romantic encounter, while producers Mauricio Rengifo and Andrés Torres balanced these roots with contemporary radio standards during their work in 2015 and 2016.

An English-language remix featuring Justin Bieber dropped in April 2017 to target international markets outside the Spanish-speaking world. This version added new verses to the original composition, helping the song cross language barriers it had already begun to erode through its sheer popularity. Critics noted the release as a turning point for Latin urban music, reintroducing the genre to global mainstream airwaves at a scale not seen since the late 1980s or mid-1990s. [edit]
