Deportivo Saprissa

Deportivo Saprissa, commonly known as Saprissa, is a Costa Rican sports club based in San Juan de Tibás, a suburb of San José, and is best known for its professional football team. The club was founded on July 16, 1935, and is named after one of its founders, Ricardo Saprissa Aymá. It has competed in Costa Rica's top flight, the Liga FPD (Primera División), since 1949. The team plays its home matches at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá, a venue with a seating capacity of 23,112. The club's colors are burgundy and white, and its official nickname is "El Monstruo Morado" (The Maroon Monster), a moniker coined by the newspaper Diario Extra in 1987 during a derby, when a reporter described the sea of purple-clad fans and their noise as being "in the presence of a thousand headed monster."

Saprissa is the most decorated football team in Central America. Domestically, they have won 40 Primera División de Costa Rica titles, including six consecutive national championships during the 1970s. Internationally, they have lifted the CONCACAF Champions' Cup three times (1993, 1995, 2005) and claimed five Central American crowns. In 2005, they became only the second CONCACAF club to finish third at the FIFA Club World Cup, a feat that brought them worldwide recognition. The IFFHS named them the CONCACAF Team of the 20th Century. The club's main partner is Horizonte Morado, a consortium led by Juan Carlos Rojas Callán, Edgar Zurcher, and Televisora de Costa Rica.

Recent roster activity includes notable transfers: winger Akheem Wilson was loaned to Red Bull New York II for the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season, and striker Warren Madrigal, a 21-year-old with 29 goals and 12 assists in 132 career professional appearances, was signed by Nashville SC from the Costa Rican top league. A recent match in the CONCACAF Central American Cup saw Saprissa defeat UMECIT FC 2-1 in Panama, with Torres leading the scoring. In domestic league play, Saprissa defeated AD San Carlos 2-1 on August 3, 2026, and is scheduled to face Puntarenas F.C. on August 9, 2026. The club was founded on July 16, 1935, by a group of young men including Ricardo Saprissa Aymá, a Spanish-born engineer who had settled in Costa Rica. They named the club in his honor. Saprissa joined the first division in 1949 and quickly established itself as a powerhouse, winning its first league title in 1952. The 1970s were a golden era, with six consecutive national championships from 1972 to 1977, a feat unmatched in Costa Rican football.

On the international stage, Saprissa claimed its first CONCACAF Champions' Cup in 1993, defeating León of Mexico in the final. They repeated the feat in 1995 and again in 2005, the latter victory earning them a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan. There, they finished third after beating Al Ahly of Egypt 3-2, becoming only the second CONCACAF club to achieve that podium finish. That performance solidified their reputation as a continental giant.

In 2005, the club also became the first Central American team to reach the final of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup since the tournament's restructure, though they lost to Pumas UNAM. The IFFHS later recognized Saprissa as the CONCACAF Team of the 20th Century.
