Denis Shapovalov

Denis Viktorovich Shapovalov arrived in Tel Aviv on April 15, 1999, before moving to Canada where he would eventually redefine what it means to be a young tennis star. The left-handed player known for his explosive one-handed backhand and aggressive ground game quickly climbed the ranks, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10 on September 21, 2020. His journey began with remarkable junior success, including winning the doubles title at the 2015 US Open alongside Félix Auger-Aliassime and claiming the singles crown at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships. These early victories set the stage for a professional career that shattered age-related expectations. Shapovalov made his mark on the senior tour by becoming the youngest player ever to reach the semi-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament when he finished third at the 2017 Canadian Open at just 18 years old. He followed this breakthrough with a second Masters semi-final run at the 2018 Madrid Open, ending that year ranked inside the top 30 as the youngest player in the group. His momentum continued through 2019, where he secured his first ATP Tour singles title at the Stockholm Open and reached the final of the Paris Masters. By 2020, he had advanced to his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open and hit his peak ranking of world No. 10. His best performance at a major came at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, where he pushed all the way to the semifinals. Beyond singles, Shapovalov has carved out a significant presence in doubles, particularly with partner Rohan Bopanna. They reached their first doubles final at the 2019 Stuttgart Open, which propelled Shapovalov past Adil Shamasdin to become the number one Canadian doubles player. Together they also achieved five quarter-finals and one semi-final at the Masters level. His unique style features powerful forehands and serves, often leading him to play serve-and-volley tactics on faster surfaces. In recognition of his rapid ascent, peers voted him the ATP Most Improved Player and ATP Star of Tomorrow in 2017.
