South Africa's largest arms manufacturer traces its modern identity to a 1992 restructuring that separated production from procurement. The government consolidated Armscor's manufacturing subsidiaries under one banner to create Denel SOC Ltd, establishing a single entity responsible for building everything from armored vehicles to tactical missiles.

The company operates through four main business units: Denel Aeronautics, Denel Land Systems, Denel Dynamics, and Denel Optronics. These divisions deliver critical hardware including the G6 howitzer, the Umkhonto surface-to-air missile, and upgrades for the Cheetah fighter jet fleet. While it holds a monopoly on certain legacy systems domestically, the firm competes globally against giants like BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin for export contracts.

Leadership faced severe turbulence during the state capture era between 2010 and 2018, which resulted in massive debt, corruption arrests, and project collapses. Former CEO Schalk van der Merwe was arrested amid these scandals, and board members faced suspension or removal.
