Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Set in Taisho-era Japan, a world where man-eating demons prowl the night, the story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a perceptive and kind-hearted boy who sells charcoal to support his family. Returning home one evening, he finds his entire family slaughtered by a demon. The sole survivor is his younger sister Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon herself. Unlike others of her kind, Nezuko retains a shred of humanity and protects Tanjiro rather than attacking him. Driven by grief and determination, Tanjiro seeks out the Demon Slayer Corps, a secret order of warriors who train in specialized breathing techniques to fight demons. Under the tutelage of Sakonji Urokodaki, he masters Water Breathing and joins the Corps, embarking on a quest to find a cure for Nezuko and confront the progenitor of all demons, Muzan Kibutsuji.

The series is a dark fantasy adventure that blends supernatural horror with historical fiction. Its central themes include the unbreakable bonds of family, the persistence of compassion in the face of tragedy, and the moral complexity of good and evil. Tanjiro's empathy extends even to his demonic enemies, as he often glimpses the sorrow of their human past. The Taisho setting juxtaposes traditional Japanese swordsmanship and folklore with the early 20th-century modernization of Japan. The narrative unfolds through a series of escalating arcs, each introducing new allies, such as the cowardly but gifted Zenitsu Agatsuma and the boar-masked brute Inosuke Hashibira, as well as the elite swordsmen known as the Hashira.

Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020, the manga was compiled into 23 tankobon volumes published by Shueisha. The English edition by Viz Media began release in July 2018. The series achieved extraordinary commercial success, with over 150 million copies in circulation by 2023. It won the 2021 Harvey Award for Best Manga and the 2021 Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material, Asia, among other honors. The anime adaptation by Ufotable premiered in 2019 and became a cultural phenomenon, particularly the 2020 film Mugen Train, which became the highest-grossing Japanese film worldwide. The franchise has expanded into multiple anime seasons, video games, light novels, and stage plays, cementing its status as one of the most influential shonen properties of the 2020s.[edit]
