About
Dell Technologies is a multinational technology company headquartered in Round Rock, Texas, that designs, manufactures, and sells personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, and IT services. Founded in 1984 by Michael Dell while he was a student at the University of Texas at Austin, the company initially operated as PC's Limited from his dormitory room. Its direct-to-consumer sales model, which allowed customers to order custom-configured computers by phone, bypassed traditional retail markups and revolutionized the PC industry. By the early 2000s, Dell had become the world's largest PC vendor, a position it held until being overtaken by HP and later Lenovo.
In 2013, Michael Dell and investment firm Silver Lake took the company private in a $24.9 billion leveraged buyout, the largest such deal at the time, to restructure away from Wall Street pressure. Three years later, Dell acquired EMC Corporation for approximately $67 billion, the largest technology acquisition in history, creating Dell Technologies and transforming the company into a dominant force in enterprise IT infrastructure. The acquisition brought under one roof the Dell brand, Dell EMC (storage and servers), VMware (virtualization), Pivotal (cloud software), and RSA (security). In 2018, Dell returned to the public market via a complex stock swap and began trading again on the NYSE under the ticker DELL. In November 2021, it spun off its 81% stake in VMware, simplifying its corporate structure and generating significant cash.
Dell's product lineup spans consumer and business segments. For consumers and small businesses, the XPS line offers premium ultrabooks, Inspiron covers mainstream laptops and desktops, Alienware and G Series target gaming. For enterprises, the PowerEdge server line, PowerStore and PowerMax storage arrays, PowerSwitch networking, and Precision workstations form the backbone of its offerings. The company also provides extensive IT services including managed infrastructure, cloud consulting, cybersecurity, and hardware support through Dell Services and SupportAssist. As of fiscal year 2024, Dell Technologies reported revenue of $88.4 billion and employed approximately 120,000 people globally. It operates major manufacturing and support centers in the United States, China, Malaysia, Ireland, and India.
Dell has faced notable controversies. Between 2006 and 2010, the company settled SEC charges for using improper accounting practices and making payments to Intel to avoid reporting earnings shortfalls, paying a $100 million fine. It has also faced persistent criticism over the quality of its customer support, particularly for consumer hardware, with complaints about long wait times and difficulty obtaining warranty repairs. In the late 2010s, there were notable complaints about overheating and build quality issues in high-end Alienware gaming laptops. Despite these issues, Dell has become a major beneficiary of the AI boom, with its PowerEdge XE9680 server designed for AI workloads seeing explosive demand. The company is a key partner for NVIDIA in deploying enterprise AI solutions.
