Delhi University

The University of Delhi, commonly called Delhi University or DU, is a collegiate and research central university located in New Delhi, India. Founded in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly, it has grown into one of the country's largest and most respected institutions of higher learning. Its governance is distinctive: the Vice President of India serves as Chancellor, while the President of India holds the position of Visitor, reflecting its national importance.

DU operates multiple campuses across the capital, North Campus, South Campus, and additional facilities in East and West Delhi, and affiliates more than 90 colleges. These include prestigious institutions like St. Stephen's College, Hindu College, Lady Shri Ram College, Miranda House, and Kirori Mal College. Delhi University was established in 1922, during the British colonial era, to serve as the intellectual heart of the new capital. It began with just two colleges, St. Stephen's College and Hindu College, and a handful of departments. The university's early years saw rapid expansion, with new colleges opening across the city to meet growing demand for higher education.

After India gained independence in 1947, DU became a central university, funded and governed by the central government. This status brought significant investment and allowed it to expand its academic offerings and research capabilities. The 1960s and 1970s saw the establishment of the South Campus and the School of Open Learning, making education more accessible.

In recent decades, DU has grappled with challenges such as student activism, fee hikes, and the implementation of new academic frameworks like the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).
